With a father in the United States Air Force, Ian Schinelli moved around a lot as a kid. After growing up all over the US, Ian enrolled at Belmont University, right here in Nashville. While earning his Accounting degree, Ian played for the Belmont men’s soccer team throughout his college career. When graduation arrived, Ian faced a choice: continue on the path toward a professional soccer career or become an accountant. He chose neither. Instead, Ian decided to enlist and become a Navy SEAL.
After a ten-year SEAL career, Ian completed his last deployment in 2019 and moved from San Diego, CA, back to Nashville to raise his daughter here, close to family. He remains in the Navy SEAL Reserves, and meanwhile, has had quite a successful career transition.
Ian is the most recent addition to our Nashville, TN, market, and he joins the Viking team from a private equity and portfolio management organization. As a portfolio manager in Nashville, he specialized on the buyer side, primarily working in the construction-based, small- to midsize market, and thrived in the extremely intense work environment.
With his background in the buy-side of business deals, Ian brings valuable insight to Viking clients looking to sell a business. Because he knows what it’s like to be the buyer, he knows what attracts a buyer to a business; but even more, he can also empathize with what the sellers are working through, and he understands what matters to them when looking for a buyer.

Advice If You Are Thinking Of Selling A Business
Ian says that the best time to sell a business is when it is doing well, and you can breathe. He acknowledges that it is harder to walk away when the business is trending in a positive direction, but that is the right time to do it: when your financials are moving upward, the team working for you is cohesive and strong, and sales are flourishing. Ian affirms that this is extremely attractive to buyers, and that is how you want to represent yourself and your business.
Like all of Viking’s divisions, our business advisors in Nashville, TN, engage with potential clients early on in the sales process and remain engaged until the timing is right for the client. Every business is different, and so are the needs of the business owner, especially when forming an exit strategy. Our advisors understand that selling a business is not an isolated event. Rather, it is a process that deserves careful planning, communication, and execution.
Advice If You Are Thinking Of Buying A Business
If you are thinking of buying a business in Nashville, TN, now is a very good time. Right now the market is hot in Nashville overall, but Ian’s favorite sectors remain the construction space, as well as construction accounting, and managed IT.
Ian urges buyers to remember you are looking to purchase an income stream. The current cash flow should be enough to service the debt to the bank, SBA, etc., and to make a good living for yourself. You also want to be sure you choose a business you can get behind – something you can be passionate about – whether it’s the business itself, the people who operate it, or the location (Nashville or otherwise).
Finally, when considering business, always ensure that you obtain the appropriate amount of information about the company and that the information is accurate. Among other things, that is one area that our business advisors in Nashville can help with. Viking actually pre-qualifies businesses through SBA lenders, so the buyers we work with can have confidence in their purchase.
